IoT application development

IoT application development

Bring device messages, application logic and useful business information together.

Discuss your requirements

IoT application development, explained

Turn connected-device information into a useful business application.

An IoT application links equipment and its information to a practical outcome: seeing the condition of an asset, understanding a reading, receiving an alert or feeding another business system. Connectivity is one layer. The complete application also needs a way to identify devices, interpret their messages and make the information useful to the people who act on it.

Radian can help scope the connected service and coordinate the appropriate development and delivery specialists. We start with the job the application should do, then review the device, connection and software requirements together. A useful project defines what success looks like, including how the application behaves when readings are late, duplicated, incomplete or unavailable.

What it can do for your organisation

Practical benefits.
A clearer business fit.

01

Information with a purpose

A dashboard becomes more useful when it answers a defined operational question. Establish which measurements matter, who needs them and which action follows a particular condition. This keeps the project focused on a working process rather than collecting every available reading without knowing how it will be used.

02

A connected workflow

Device events can be linked to notifications, records or tasks in suitable business applications. An integration may help reduce manual re-keying and bring the information into a process people already understand. The mapping, permissions and handling of failed updates need to be part of the design.

03

A pilot that can support growth

Begin with representative devices and a bounded outcome. Use the pilot to examine information quality, normal event patterns and the work needed to operate the application. A repeatable provisioning and support process then gives a larger deployment a more useful foundation.

Make an informed choice

The options and details
worth understanding.

01

Device messages and application interfaces

The application needs to know which device produced a message, what its fields mean and when the event occurred. MQTT is one commonly used publish-and-subscribe approach for device messaging; HTTP interfaces and other supported protocols may also be appropriate. A consistent message format, device identity and versioning plan help software distinguish a new device type or changed payload from an actual equipment fault.

02

Data quality, storage and event handling

Connections can drop and devices can retry, so a design should consider late messages, duplicates and missing information. Buffering, acknowledgements and replay behaviour depend on the device and platform. Preserve the distinction between a measured value and an estimated or inferred value. Storage, retention and access should reflect the purpose of the information and the needs of the people using it.

03

Rules, analytics and assisted decisions

A deterministic rule can trigger a defined action when an agreed condition is met. Statistical analysis or an AI model may be useful for a more complex pattern, but it needs representative information and evaluation against the task. Record the action taken and the context behind it. Human review and the boundaries of automated control are established for the application rather than assumed from a model demonstration.

How this can fit your world

From a service description
to a practical requirement.

Illustrative scenario

Condition monitoring for business equipment

A team wants to see how equipment readings change and receive an alert when a defined condition needs attention. The pilot can establish ordinary operating patterns, the message format and the path from a notification to an assigned task. Missing readings should be visible as a different condition from a normal reading.

Illustrative scenario

Connected assets feeding a business application

Equipment events need to appear in an existing operational system. Review the receiving system's interface, the identifiers used on both sides and what happens if it is temporarily unavailable. Test repeat messages and retries so an interruption does not create an unexpected collection of duplicate business records.

From planning to everyday use

Delivery with the details
thought through.

  1. 01

    Define the useful outcome

Identify the users, decisions and devices involved. Agree the initial scope and the evidence that will demonstrate a useful result.

  2. 02

    Design the information path

Map device identities, payloads, connectivity, storage and integrations. Establish access, ownership and the expected failure behaviour.

  3. 03

    Build and evaluate a pilot

Test representative devices and information. Include normal use, interrupted connections and the conditions that require an alert or human decision.

  4. 04

    Prepare for operation

Document deployment, support and change processes. Review monitoring, maintenance and versioning before the application is scaled or handed over.

Your proposal confirms the available features, supported platforms and delivery responsibilities. Product availability and individual service commitments depend on the selected agreement.

Mobile & IoT overview →
Do we need a bespoke application for every IoT project?

No. An existing platform or a limited integration may be suitable. The requirements review should establish whether configuration, integration or custom development is the most useful route for the outcome you need.

Can information feed our existing business software?

Where the receiving system provides a suitable interface, an integration can be explored. We review identifiers, permissions, field mapping and error handling before confirming the proposed connection between systems.

Does every project need AI?

No. Clear rules and well-structured information can solve many useful tasks. More complex analytics should have a defined purpose and an evaluation method, rather than being added without evidence that it helps the application.

What happens when a device loses connectivity?

The answer depends on the equipment and application design. Possible arrangements include local buffering, retries and a visible stale-data state. These behaviours need to be planned and tested with the actual device and platform.

Who maintains the finished application?

The proposal should identify ownership of the device software, platform, integrations and user-facing application. Support, updates, source-code handover where applicable and changes to connected services need a clear operating arrangement.

UK-wide service enquiries

IoT application development across the UK.

A development brief should identify the devices, data, users and decisions the application supports. Agree integration access, security, delivery stages and ongoing ownership for a UK pilot before planning wider deployment.

Based in Charlwood, we welcome enquiries nationwide, with a particular focus on Horley, Crawley, Gatwick, Surrey, Sussex and London. Delivery, availability and any site attendance are confirmed for your chosen service.
